Mexican American Home Altars
Our fourth film explores how Mexican American women make a place for their families in Minnesota by faithfully keeping altars in their homes and through acts of devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe, the indigenized form of Mary encountered on an Aztec holy mountain above Mexico City, and other saints. The three women interviewed in their homes are devout Catholics, regular attendees of mass at the parish altar of Sagrado Corazon/Incarnation in Minneapolis. They also exercise extraordinary religious authority in their families and lay community, keeping home altars as spiritually centered places of prayer, ancestral memory, and beauty.
